Chapter 7 Summary
Chapter 7 discusses networking and topics related to that such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It also touches on the Internet of Things (IoT) and the many security concerns those devices introduce, especially when used in tandem with common security vulnerabilities that often exist in people’s personal wi-fi (like leaving the password unchanged on the admin account for their home network.) The information regarding the security risks of IoT devices isn’t new to me, but I’ve always found it sort of funny… Surely whoever set up the home wi-fi network would have needed to use the admin account to create the network name and password. It’s also common knowledge not to make your passwords public. So why, then, does that rule seem to go out the window so frequently when it’s directed at the admin account of your home wi-fi? If someone is tech-savvy enough to reroute all your network traffic, they’re definitely tech-savvy enough to guess the username of the admin account is the default “admin” and the password is the default “password,” and if they have access to the admin account, well… Your unnecessarily complex network password certainly isn’t going to stop them.
