Chapter 6 Summary

Chapter 6 of the textbook is on internet security, mainly focusing on preventing your private data from being leaked as well as avoiding malware in general. It discusses a variety of security risks, types of network attacks, scams, and, of course, malware. Despite my childhood experiences with malware (mainly the fact that I was a magnet for it), it has likely been close to 10 years since I’ve infected a computer with malware to my knowledge. It’s possible some things flew under the radar, but if there were any viruses on any of my past or current PCs, they aren’t causing the operating system to become unusable, so it’s an improvement nonetheless! This chapter served as a good refresher about what to watch out for in emails, and a reminder that you should always make sure the URLs of websites you frequent are correct. That last point is especially important should you ever visit any “free media” hosting websites because the reputable ones often have a horde of fakes waiting for that poor individual who accidentally types “.com” instead of “.net,” or mistakes a lowercase “L” for a capital “i.”
