Chapter 5 Summary
Chapter 5 covered the topic of user-generated content on the internet, primarily social media. It also touched on steps to take to protect your reputation online, such as being conscious of your behavior and the types of content you interact with, though that was a minor part of the overall chapter. The part I found most interesting was the portion about Twitter, and how the terms for posting and reposting (“tweeting” and “retweeting,” respectively) had cemented themselves as general terms for making or sharing a microblog post… It really exacerbates just how poor of a decision changing Twitter’s name to “X” was. Twitter had managed to permanently alter how many, if not most, people refer to microblog posts, so changing the name from something ubiquitous with microblogging to something as bland and forgettable as X (and subsequently tossing out the bird-themed terminology) certainly was a… choice. I was a frequent Twitter user between 2016 and 2021 or so (I still use it, just significantly less), and in that time there were many complaints about nearly every aspect of the website/app. However, one thing I never saw anyone take issue with was the name and the bird theme used to refer to posting.
