Chapter 3 Summary
Chapter 3 covers how to efficiently search for information via a search engine or database, as well as how to filter results by using logical operators such as AND, OR, and NOT. It also touches on the best practices for analyzing the validity of whatever sources you may come across. I consider myself reasonably good at using search engines, so quite little of the information regarding the efficient usage of search engines was new to me. The major exception to this is Google’s logical operators; I had read a few years ago that Google no longer supported them (with the exception of the NOT operator, though it uses a minus sign in front of the word you want to omit as opposed to typing out “NOT”), so I wasn’t particularly making use of them… Apparently that wasn’t the case, and now that I’m aware of that, I will definitely be using them in my future Google searches. I also was not aware that you could use parentheses around search terms with logical operators between them to group them together, and I am certain that will prove to be useful in my future searches.
